Dominican Republic

July 2009 - Photographs above feature Maricel Cuevas with the children at the school in La Torre, a suburb of La Vega in the Dominican Republic.  The families there live in very modest homes built with just basic materials.  Thanks to contributions raised by Maricel, the classrooms have some books and basic supplies available to the children.  One of the photographs features the newly hired teacher Belky Mora Cepeda, a full-of-life 27 year-old who has high hopes for a brighter future for all.  The school she teaches, called Angeles en Acción/Angels in Action (named after the organization in Florida), is located in a 'barrio' called Capotillo in the Dominican Republic capital of Santo Domingo.   Capotillo is a area plagued by drugs and crime; more than a reason to appreciate and support Belky's willingness to help the school children there.  The entrance to the classroom is the blue door in the narrow alley between the bare walls where the children are gathered.
December 2008 - Approval of Grant Request for $3,000 to support the annual salary of a Kindergarten teacher ($250/month) at the Maria La Auxiliadora school in La Torre, La Vega.  This school is supported by the student body at St. Patrick Catholic School in Miami Beach, Florida.  Project is coordinated by Angels in Action, Inc., a charity based in Pompano Beach, Florida founded by Maricel Cuevas.  Most of the funds for this grant have been contributed by the Rotary Club of St. Charles Breakfast, Illinois.
