2009 - Photographs above feature Maricel Cuevas with the
children at the school in La Torre, a suburb of La Vega in the
Dominican Republic. The families there live in very modest
homes built with just basic materials. Thanks to
contributions raised by Maricel, the classrooms have some books
and basic supplies available to the children. One of the
photographs features the newly hired teacher Belky Mora Cepeda,
a full-of-life 27 year-old who has high hopes for a brighter
future for all. The school she teaches, called Angeles en
Acción/Angels in Action (named after the organization in
Florida), is located in a 'barrio' called Capotillo in the
Dominican Republic capital of Santo Domingo.
Capotillo is a area plagued by drugs and crime; more than a
reason to appreciate and support Belky's willingness to help the
school children there. The entrance to the classroom is
the blue door in the narrow alley between the bare walls where
the children are gathered.
